Fluoride treatments offer additional protection for young teeth, helping to harden the tooth enamel, reducing the risk of cavities. During your child’s regular checkups we will assess their risk of tooth decay and will recommend regular fluoride treatments if and when required. Fluoride is applied topically to the teeth where it can easily penetrate the tooth enamel. This treatment is very safe, non-invasive and effective.
How Is Fluoride Applied to Teeth?
Here at Smile Craft Dental, we can apply fluoride to teeth in a number of different ways that include fluoride varnish, professional strength mouthwash as well as the use of fluoride gels and foams that are designed to be used in mouth trays.
Your child’s teeth will be cleaned before we apply any fluoride. Fluoride varnish is simply painted onto teeth and is left to penetrate the tooth enamel for several hours or even overnight before being brushed off. If we use a mouth tray with fluoride gel or foam then the tray will just need to be left in the mouth for a couple of minutes. Fluoride mouthwash is gently swished around the mouth for a minute before spitting it out.
We can also advise you on the use of other fluoride products for your child, as it is important to make sure they receive sufficient fluoride to protect their teeth, but they shouldn’t receive too much. We may not recommend the use of fluoridated toothpaste before age two, until they have the ability to spit out the excess.
